Stargate

The work consists of two monolithic sculptures made of plexiglass and illuminated with a neon light from the back. The images printed on each plexiglass plate show details of two nebulas from the constellation of Sagittarius, denominated M20-Trifid Nebula and Omega Nebula-NGC 6618, respectively 5200 and 6000 light years far from the Earth. The photographs were taken from the Hubble Space Telescope at the beginning of the Nineties and they testify to the period when the telescope was sent into orbit. These early images from the Hubble showed astonishing and remote landscapes, far in time and space. Nevertheless, because of a misalignment of the lens, all the images were out of focus. This error caused a huge disappointment among NASA’s astronomers, as the irreversibly damaged images were useless for scientific purposes.

The top part of each plate is based on the silhouette of the backs of the amusement park set, portrayed in the photographic series The Hidden Side of the Moon.

I due elementi monolitici in plexiglass che compongono il dittico Stargate presentano due immagini fotografiche stampate direttamente sulle lastre, relative a due nebulose presenti nella costellazione del Sagittario. Queste sono denominate M20-Trifid Nebula e Omega Nebula-NGC 6618 e sono distanti rispettivamente 5200 e 6000 anni luce dalla Terra. Le due fotografie scattate dal Telescopio Spaziale Hubble nei primi anni Novanta documentano l’epoca in cui il telescopio fu lanciato in orbita. Nonostante le prime immagini provenienti dal telescopio ritraessero paesaggi inediti e meravigliosi distanti nel tempo e nello spazio, a causa di un'imperfezione nell’ottica del telescopio, le fotografie risultarono tutte fuori fuoco. L’errore provocò grande sconforto tra gli astronomi della NASA, poichè le immagini, irreparabilmente danneggiate, erano inutilizzabili a fini scientifici. 

La parte superiore dei due monoliti di Stargate riprende la sagoma del retro delle giostre fotografate nella serie The Hidden Side of the Moon. Una sezione di queste attrazioni da luna park è stata infatti riproposta in chiave scultorea nei due monoliti.
