Black Flag Revival is a project which developed into multiple directions and includes components of performance, a photographic series, and an installation. Produced in 2012, the work relates to a specific phenomenon that occurred that year in the region of Veneto, triggered by the financial crisis of 2008, which heavily affected the economic, cultural and political situation of that region. In 2012 the region of Veneto registered the highest number of suicides in Italy and the phenomenon involved especially the entrepreneurs on the verge of bankruptcy. Another starting point of the project is an interest for the Black Flag, Californian hardcore-punk band, and their role in music and counter-culture in the 80s.

The work develops as a re-enactment of the Black Flag concerts, performed by a tribute-band, founded in 2012 by the artist, with three musicians from Veneto who had never played together. The work is a comment and an intervention in relation to the economic and cultural crisis in Italy, with a focus on a specific territory. The performance of the tribute-band was recorded on vinyl and filmed. Part of this research is a photographic work, consisting in a series portraying the facades of villas belonging to the entrepreneurs who died of suicide in 2012. The photos are projected on a wall as analogical slides. The same images appear on the cover of the tribute band’s LP. The last element in the installation is an Italian flag in grayscale, used also during the concert of the tribute band and visible in the video documentation.
Once the project concluded, the three members of the tribute band had spontaneously decided to continue to collaborate together under the name Destroy all Gondolas, producing their own music. In 2017 they released their first LP and in 2018 they left for the first concert's tour in the USA.

un progetto che si sviluppa in più direzioni e che comprende una
parte performativa, una serie fotografica e un elemento installativo.
Il
lavoro si confronta con un fenomeno verificatosi in Veneto nel 2012
come conseguenza alla crisi finanziaria del 2008 e al suo impatto
sulla situazione economica, culturale e politica nel nord-est
italiano. Il 2012 fu infatti l’anno in cui il Veneto registrò il
più alto tasso di suicidi in Italia, fenomeno che coinvolse
soprattutto imprenditori sull’orlo della bancarotta.
Un altro
punto di partenza del lavoro è l’interesse per la musica dei Black
Flag, band californiana hardcore-punk e per la loro posizione
controculturale nella scena musicale e politica statunitense degli
anni Ottanta.
In Black Flag Revival, la critica dei
Black Flag alla crisi culturale e politica del periodo di Regan,
evocata tanto nei loro pezzi, quanto nelle copertine degli album
disegnate da Raymond Pettibon, è stata riattualizzata attraverso un
re-enactment da parte di una tribute band, composta da tre musicisti
provenienti dal contesto Veneto e riuniti appositamente dall'artista
per questo progetto. La performance/concerto avvenuta il due dicembre
2012 a Venezia é stata documentata in un video ed incisa su disco in
vinile. L'opera é accompagnata da un lavoro fotografico, una serie
di scatti che ritraggono le facciate delle abitazioni degli
imprenditori suicidatisi nel 2012 in seguito alla crisi finanziaria.
La fotografie, oltre ad essere riprodotte sulla copertina del disco,
sono proiettate attraverso diapositive analogiche che scorrono in
loop. Il percorso installativo è completato da un tricolore italiano
in scala di grigi, lo stesso che che é stato appeso alle spalle
della tribute band durante la performance/concerto.
A
progetto concluso, i tre componenti della tribute band decisero
spontaneamente di continuare a collaborare con il nome Destroy
all Gondolas proponendo pezzi propri. La
band, tutt’ora attiva riscosse un notevole successo in campo internazionale; nel 2017
uscì il loro primo LP e nel 2018 realizzarono il primo tour di
concerti negli Stati Uniti.
