The Battle of Bijlmer is an event that took place on the 2nd of October 2015 at the nr. 42 of Florijn in Amsterdam-Zuidoost during the artist-in-residence-program at BijlmAIR (CBK, FLAT STATION and STEDELIJK MUSEUM BUREAU AMSTERDAM). The event, a contest of freestyle-rap, was realized through an open-call for rappers in the neighborhood of Bijlmer and other areas of the city. Rappers of different nationalities and origins responded to the open call and challenged each other in a rap battle, with the only rule of using their native language during the competition. The battle was based on improvised rhymes and ended with a winner appointed by the audience. About 86.000 people cohabit in the Bijlmer, a densely populated area of Amsterdam Southeast. Only 30% of the inhabitants are Dutch, while the rest of the people are split into 130 different nationalities that share buildings, schools, sport stadiums, supermarkets and music.
