Air from Another Planet

The title of the work is the line of a poem by Stefan George "Ich fühle Luft von anderem Planeten". The poem, referred to the composition of Arnold Schönberg String Quartet N.2 in F sharp minor, evokes an ideal that spread throughout the Twentieth Century: the desire of escaping from the world and the feeling of not entirely belonging to it.

Air from another Planet is an assemblage made with commemorative stamps, celebrating the space missions of the Soviet Union during the Cold War. Each stamp shows the curve of a planet related to one particular mission. The composition, resulting from the assemblage of the stamps, traces the circular horizon of a new planet. The assemblage is mounted on a slate board.

Il titolo dell’opera, Air from another Planet, è ispirato ad un verso della poesia di Stefan George, "Ich fühle Luft von anderem Planeten", a cui fa riferimento la composizione Quartetto per archi n. 2 in fa diesis minore di Schönberg. La poesia evoca un’idea che percorre gran parte del Novecento, secondo la quale il desiderio di evadere dal mondo corrispondeva alla convinzione di non appartenervi totalmente.

Air from another Planet è una composizione di francobolli postali commemorativi dedicati alle missioni spaziali dell’Unione Sovietica, avvenute durante la Guerra Fredda. L’assemblaggio dei francobolli, applicati su delle lastre di ardesia, segue l’andamento della curvatura del pianeta raffigurato su ogni singolo elemento e tramite una disposizione circolare visualizza l’orizzonte completo del pianeta.
