Held in Romania in autumn 2024, the program focused on uncovering marginal sites and memories of the period. Artists and researchers were invited to develop individual investigations on the Cold War, its consequences, and the ways in which the conflict has shaped identities and geopolitical divisions. EN * The Joss Paper ritual is an ancient Chinese funerary practice, widely observed throughout East and Southeast Asia. It involves burning paper replicas of everyday objects — primarily banknotes, but also other material goods — as offerings to the deceased. Through fire, the paper transforms into a spiritual substance that, according to tradition, can reach the afterlife. These offerings are intended to ensure the well-being of the deceased, allowing them to access goods, services, or protection in the realm of the dead. The research begins with a reflection on the Cold War and its legacy, shifting the focus to Southeast Asia and, in particular, Vietnam — the site of one of the longest and bloodiest conflicts of the twentieth century, which claimed the lives of three million Vietnamese. Fifty years after the end of the war, the artist traveled to Ho Chi Minh City, formerly Saigon and the capital of South Vietnam, where the conflict ended with the surrender of the American army and the beginning of a new era for the country, unified after more than a century of Western occupation. From this experience emerged 3 Million, a video documenting a performative action in which three million dollars in Joss Paper are burned in a funeral furnace on the outskirts of Ho Chi Minh City — one dollar for each victim of the war. The act draws on an ancient Chinese ritual, still practiced across much of East Asia, and combines remembrance of the victims with a reflection on the historical and economic responsibilities of the West. 3 Million invites a rethinking of the Cold War from a non-Western perspective, highlighting how history has shaped identities, memories, and political geographies. The work emphasizes how Asia — particularly Southeast Asia — continues to be a stage for geopolitical tensions, both old and new, between East and West. IT &nbsp;* Il rituale del Joss Paper è un’antica pratica funeraria di origine cinese, ampiamente diffusa in tutta l’Asia orientale e nel Sud-est asiatico. Consiste nel bruciare riproduzioni in carta di oggetti di uso quotidiano — soprattutto banconote, ma anche beni materiali — come offerte destinate ai defunti. Attraverso il fuoco, la carta si trasforma in una sostanza spirituale che, secondo la tradizione, può raggiungere l’aldilà. Queste offerte servono ad assicurare il benessere dei defunti, permettendo loro di disporre di beni, servizi o protezioni nel regno dei morti. La ricerca parte da una riflessione sulla Guerra Fredda e sulla sua eredità, spostando l’attenzione verso il Sud-est asiatico e, in particolare, sul Vietnam — teatro di uno dei conflitti più lunghi e sanguinosi del secondo Novecento, che costò la vita a tre milioni di vietnamiti. A cinquant’anni esatti dalla fine della guerra, l’artista si è recato a Ho Chi Minh City, l’ex Saigon e capitale del Vietnam del Sud, là dove il conflitto si chiuse con la resa dell’esercito americano e l’inizio di una nuova era per il Paese, unificato dopo oltre un secolo di occupazione occidentale. Il gesto si ispira a un antico rituale cinese, ancora vivo in gran parte dell’Asia orientale, e unisce il ricordo delle vittime a una riflessione sulle responsabilità storiche ed economiche dell’Occidente. 3 Million invita a ripensare la Guerra Fredda da un punto di vista non occidentocentrico, evidenziando come la storia abbia plasmato identità, memorie e geografie politiche. A portion of the ashes produced by burning the three million dollars in Joss Paper was used to create the screenprint series Currency for the Otherworld. The series explores the iconography of votive banknotes: the prints reproduce the reverse sides of the traditional Joss Paper, showing views of divine residences and the so-called “banks of the afterlife” — places where, according to tradition, souls receive the money burned by the living. The banknotes, often printed in very high denominations, almost always bear the inscription “Hell Bank Note.” The use of the term “Hell” dates back to the colonial period, when Christian missionaries in East Asia adopted it as an approximate translation for the afterlife, despite having no connection with the Christian concept of hell. On the threshold between the first room, dedicated to the video, and the second gallery, is Miao Yin, an installation made of jade beads, referencing the Jade Emperor, the supreme celestial deity of the Taoist pantheon, traditionally depicted on the front of Hell Bank Notes. Finally, the three windows of the circular space at DAS WEISSE HAUS, overlooking a busy intersection in Vienna, have been covered with a semi-opaque white film designed to soften the view of the urban landscape and suspend visual contact with the city, while still allowing natural light to filter through: Nuvole (Clouds) IT In occasione del cinquantenario della conclusione della guerra del Vietnam, 3 Million è diventata il fulcro — e il titolo — di una mostra personale presso DAS WEISSE HAUS a Vienna. Una parte della cenere prodotta dalla combustione dei tre milioni di dollari in Joss Paper è stata utilizzata per realizzare la serie di serigrafie Currency for the Otherworld. La serie approfondisce l’iconografia delle banconote votive: le serigrafie riproducono i retro delle Joss Paper tradizionali, dove compaiono vedute di residenze divine e delle cosiddette “banche dell’aldilà” — luoghi nei quali, secondo la tradizione, le anime ricevono il denaro bruciato dai vivi. Le banconote, spesso stampate in altissime denominazioni, riportano quasi sempre l’iscrizione “Hell Bank Note”. L’uso del termine “Hell” risale al periodo coloniale, quando i missionari cristiani attivi in Asia orientale lo adottarono come traduzione approssimativa dell’aldilà, pur non avendo alcun legame con il concetto cristiano di inferno. Sulla soglia che separa la prima stanza, dedicata al video, dalla seconda sala si trova Miao Yin, un’installazione composta da perle di giada, un rimando all’Imperatore di Giada, suprema divinità celeste del pantheon taoista, tradizionalmente raffigurata sul fronte delle Hell Bank Notes. Infine, le tre finestre dello spazio circolare di DAS WEISSE HAUS, affacciate su un incrocio di Vienna, sono state rivestite con una pellicola bianca semi-opaca concepita per attenuare la vista del hypothetical reconstruction of the Earth’s appearance approximately 290 million years ago. The borders of present-day nation-states (as of 2024) are redistributed according to the logic of contemporary political cartography, with each territory entirely filled with its national flag — an explicit reference to Alighiero Boetti’s iconic Mappe. The homage to the Italian artist extends beyond aesthetics to the very process of making. While Boetti entrusted the realization of his maps to artisanal embroiderers abroad, in Pangea the embroidery is simulated through a meticulous graphic gesture, drawn by hand with colored ballpoint pens in a long, manual process carried out day by day over the course of a full year. The temporal friction activated by the work — overlaying geological and contemporary time scales — exposes the arbitrariness of political boundaries: spaces now separated by vast oceans were once contiguous, while today’s nation-states appear, from a geological perspective, as provisional entities scattered across opposite hemispheres. IT L’opera è una mappa su larga scala della Pangea in versione politica: una ricostruzione ipotetica dell’aspetto della Terra circa 290 milioni di anni fa. I confini degli attuali Stati nazionali (anno 2024) vengono ridistribuiti secondo la logica della cartografia politica contemporanea, con ogni territorio interamente riempito dalla propria bandiera nazionale — un riferimento esplicito alle iconiche Mappe di Alighiero Boetti. L’omaggio all’artista italiano va oltre l’aspetto estetico e coinvolge il processo stesso di realizzazione. Mentre Boetti affidava la produzione delle sue mappe a ricamatrici artigiane all’estero, in Pangea il ricamo è simulato attraverso un gesto grafico meticoloso, tracciato a mano con penne a sfera colorate in un lungo processo manuale portato avanti giorno dopo giorno nell’arco di un intero anno. It is used alongside images of special and beautiful places, with a clear message: despite the beauty of the location, it would have been even more meaningful if the recipient had been there with the sender. In this project, however, the phrase takes on a different meaning. The buildings depicted no longer exist as they appear in the postcards, as they have been reduced to piles of rubble due to the recent attacks by the 1$r@el1 Army on G@z@*, which have affected not only the civilian population but also places of worship, markets, schools, hospitals, and homes. The phrase, therefore, expresses a different desire: the desire to restore those places from their current state of destruction to the condition shown in the postcard. Visitors can purchase one or more parts of the artwork by leaving a minimum donation directly in the collection box, and stamp the back of the postcard with the designated green stamp. All proceeds will be donated to non-profit organizations working on the reconstruction of G@z@.The wish to bring these destroyed places back to life can only become reality through awareness and collective action. * The current state (February 2025) of the depicted site is visible through the QR code on the back of the postcard, at the top right. ** 100% of the funds raised through donations will be allocated to non-profit organizations involved in the reconstruction of G@z@ and the support of the P@lestini@n population. Viene utilizzata in corrispondenza di immagini di luoghi speciali e suggestivi, con un messaggio chiaro: nonostante la bellezza del posto, sarebbe stato ancora più significativo se il destinatario fosse stato insieme al mittente. Nel caso di questo progetto, però, la frase acquista un significato diverso. Gli edifici raffigurati non esistono più come appaiono nell'immagine, ma sono stati ridotti a cumuli di macerie a causa dei recenti attacchi dell'esercito 1$rael1an0 a G@z@*, che hanno colpito non solo la popolazione civile, ma anche luoghi di culto, mercati, scuole, ospedali e abitazioni. La frase, quindi, esprime un desiderio diverso: il desiderio di riportare quei luoghi dallo stato di distruzione attuale a quello rappresentato sulla cartolina. As the finance minister during the short-lived Bavarian Soviet Republic, Gesell introduced a currency with an “expiration date,” designed to promote rapid exchanges that couldn't be easily hoarded. One of its most successful applications occurred in the town of Wörgl in Tyrol, where, from 1932 to 1933, it was implemented to counter the economic crisis caused by the Great Depression. The experiment brought significant economic benefits to the local community, where the "ice currency" could circulate up to 40 times faster than the official currency.Moneta di Ghiaccio consists of a mini fridge containing replicas of coins made of gallium, a metal that melts at only 30 degrees Celsius and dissolves if held in hand for an extended period.The artwork has been developed on the occasion of the centenary of the University of Trieste, during which 10 visual artists were invited to participate in a residency program curated by Eva Comuzzi. Each artist was assigned to a specific faculty, and Ryts Monet collaborated with the Faculty of Economics. The artwork is part of the University's art collection and is displayed on the first floor of the main building of the University of Trieste. IT L'opera è ispirata alle teorie dell'economista e anarchico tedesco Silvio Gesell (1862-1930) che, nel suo testo principale L'Ordine Economico Naturale (1916) ha descritto il funzionamento della moneta "deperibile". Ministro delle finanze durante la breve Repubblica Bavarese dei Consigli, Gesell ha teorizzato una valuta di ghiaccio con “data di scadenza” destinata a favorire scambi rapidi e che non poteva essere accumulata agevolmente. Una delle sue applicazioni più riuscite si è avuta nella cittadina di Wörgl in Tirolo, dove, dal 1932 al 1933 è stata applicata per contrastare la crisi economica generata dalla Grande Depressione. L'esperimento ha apportato notevoli benefici economici alla comunità locale dove la moneta di ghiaccio poteva circolare con una velocità fino a 40 volte superiore che rispetto alla valuta ufficiale. Moneta di Ghiaccio consiste in un mini frigobar che custodisce copie&nbsp;di&nbsp;monete&nbsp;realizzate in gallio, un metallo che fonde a soli 30 gradi centigradi e si scioglie se tenuto in mano per un periodo prolungato. L'opera è stata concepita in occasione del centenario dell'Università di Trieste, durante il quale sono stati invitati 10 artisti visivi a partecipare a un programma di residenze curato da Eva Comuzzi. Ogni artista è stato associato a una specifica facoltà, e Ryts Monet ha collaborato con la Facoltà di Economia. Adjacent to the artwork, a speculative conceptual map in poster format, relating architectural and symbolic elements of the global economy and finance to those of classical art and architecture. Visitors are invited to take a copy of the map which includes captions and references to the images. In daily life practicalities, this meant that the 3-peso bills, emblematic of the Castro revolution and featuring one of the most iconic symbols of rebellion—Che’s image—had lost any significant monetary value and were, thus, disappearing from circulation. The artist sets on a quest to find a willing participant who will gather 50 3-pesos bills from local people, markets, and shops and hand them over to the artist in exchange for a single 10-euro bill while the process is recorded.* By connecting the state of economic crisis with that of ideological decline, the work reveals the inevitable contemporary intertwinements of communist and capitalist principles and practices. If Jesus Wasn’t White is an event that invites participants to critically reflect on the cultural impact of visual identity and the communication strategies employed by multinational corporations. The event is structured into two distinct yet complementary parts. The first part is a 30-minute lecture-performance during which 60 slides are shown, analyzing examples of well-known corporate brands. Through these analyzes, participants are introduced to the fundamentals of graphic design and corporate visual identity. The lecture intertwines historical, religious, and contemporary marketing considerations, with a particular focus on the cultural effects of free-market dynamics in a post-globalization context. The lecture-performance highlights aspects of neocolonialism, analyzing how many companies, in addition to exporting products and promoting lifestyles beyond their national borders, incorporate colors and symbols into their branding that evoke their country of origin. Among the examples discussed is the French supermarket chain&nbsp;Carrefour, which operates extensively in many former French colonies and whose logo integrates the three colors of the French flag. The second part of the event consists of a workshop where participants, guided by the artist, manually create their own brand. This exercise is based on a personal and speculative reflection on the concepts of "non-place" and utopia. At the end of the workshop, participants share their creations, presenting and discussing them together. The resulting artifacts are then collected into an ongoing series that currently includes about one hundred logos produced during the previous three workshops, and which could, in the future, become the subject of an exhibition. The title If Jesus Wasn’t White references a widely discussed theory that Jesus of Nazareth did not resemble the way he is often depicted—fair-skinned, blue-eyed, and blond-haired —as this image is inconsistent with his Palestinian origin. Furthermore, the cross, a central symbol of Christianity, can be considered one of the earliest examples of a multinational "brand." The project was first presented on September 30, 2021, in a bar in Vienna’s 20th district as part of Urban Instructions, a public art initiative curated by the collective BUUUUUUUUU. Later, on August 30, 2022, If Jesus Wasn’t White was hosted by the Vienna Secession during one of the events in the&nbsp;Tuesday@Secession series, which invites new members to share their artistic practice with the public. Tra gli esempi trattati, spicca quello della catena francese di supermercati Carrefour, presente in molte ex colonie francesi, il cui logo integra i tre colori della bandiera francese. La seconda parte dell’evento consiste in un workshop durante il quale i partecipanti, guidati dall’artista, creano manualmente un proprio marchio inserendo attraverso di esso una riflessione sul concetto di "non-luogo" e di utopia. Al termine del laboratorio, i partecipanti condividono i propri elaborati, esponendoli e discutendone insieme. Gli artefatti vengono poi raccolti in una collezione, che attualmente conta circa cento loghi realizzati nei tre workshop precedenti e che, in futuro, potrebbe diventare il soggetto di una mostra. Il titolo If Jesus Wasn’t White&nbsp;richiama una teoria diffusa secondo cui Gesù di Nazareth non avrebbe avuto l’aspetto con cui è spesso raffigurato – carnagione chiara, occhi azzurri, capelli biondi – poiché tale rappresentazione contrasta con la sua origine palestinese. Inoltre, la croce, simbolo centrale del cristianesimo, può essere considerata uno dei più antichi esempi di "brand" multinazionale. Il progetto è stato presentato per la prima volta il 30 settembre 2021, in un bar del ventesimo distretto di Vienna, nell’ambito di Urban Instructions, un’iniziativa di arte pubblica curata dal collettivo&nbsp;BUUUUUUUUU. imbalances in economic and political relations at an environmental level. Ryts Monet has chosen the image of the planisphere made by decrease, wearing down and consuming a denim fabric support until the image of an exhausted Earth was generated, reduced to shreds. The intention of the work is to raise questions about the impact that the hyper-consumerist market and the massive extraction of resources already have and will have in the future both locally and globally. It also questions the ambiguity of political and economic choices in a globalized world that run counter to the need for environmental awareness.The work was conceived within the context of Circul Art 2, a project curated by Cittadellarte, Fondazione Pistoletto of Biella and produced in collaboration with Officina+39, with the aim of integrating artistic production, fashion, and business around the theme of sustainability.&nbsp; IT World Map&nbsp;(about sustainable fashion)&nbsp;ha origine da una riflessione sugli squilibri nei rapporti economici e politici a livello ambientale. Ryts Monet ha scelto l'immagine del planisfero realizzata per sottrazione, logorando e consumando un supporto di tessuti denim fino a generare l'immagine di una Terra esausta ormai ridotta a brandelli. L’intenzione dell’opera è quella di sollevare delle domande sull'impatto che il mercato iper-consumista e la massiccia estrazione di risorse hanno e avranno in futuro, su scala locale e globale. Inoltre l'opera si interroga sull’ambiguità delle scelte politiche ed economiche di un mondo globalizzato che vanno in controsenso con le necessità di sostenibilità e consapevolezza ambientale.
